I wanted to create a painting which is considered in the style of poster art. Also I thought it would be good to do something totally unique and different in theme, set apart from the other paintings which have been produced in the Redemption Series. The Secret Agent is designed on James Bond, but instead of our man in the tuxedo being the hero, he is a KGB Russian agent instead. Most of the time, like in a fairy tale, people usually see the good guy as the winner, and everyone lives happily ever after. But this is a reminder there’s a nemesis on the other side working against everything which we consider good, and sometimes the bad guy wins instead. I personally grew up in the 1980’s and it was the time of the Cold War, a great power struggle and arms race involving the United States of America and the former communist Soviet Union or USSR. It was a very scary and unpredictable time where mankind came very close to destroying the world with Nuclear weapons. The painting is a little bit like a time capsule, a glimpse into the past where like World War 2 it was a time of great fear and uncertainty. However, there is a comedy side to this painting which gives that element of camp humour, I decided to give our Russian friend a face that looks snobby, and silly at the same time. He’s more like Johnny English than a serious Russian agent.
